The trend of using natural motifs and themes in décor schemes is still gaining momentum.
While browsing HomeSense the other day, I couldn’t get over the number of fun toss cushions and pillows that feature leaves, plants and—perhaps most of all—birds.
There’s still a real zeal for using bird motifs in décor and accessories, especially now that it’s Spring (well, technically; the snow is still flying here in Halifax…). I’ve seen eclectic bird and feather designs on toss cushions, wall art and sculpture, and even wallpaper patterns with owls and doves—what a unique idea for a fun accent wall.
Like most looks, you’ll probably want to use this look in moderation. A few toss cushions with bird motifs paired with a bird-themed vase or sculpture should suffice in a room. Don’t get too carried away—bird embellishments on almost everything in a room would be overkill. The toss cushions above are from designer Thomas Paul (his Tweeter design reversible cushions, which I am coveting right now).

These bird sculptures came from a summer home near Cherry Hill on Nova Scotia’s South Shore that we shot a few summer’s ago for the magazine. James Ingram snapped the photos. Unfortunately, I don’t have the name of the artist.
This is the Birdseye wall decal from Umbra. Something fun for the kitchen or dining nook.
While you’re on the bird kick, be sure and check out the U.S. sketch comedy group/TV show called Portlandia. They poke fun at the design industry’s appetite for all things bird in their sketch, “Put a bird on it.” Design Sponge did a post about them back in January—you can take a look at it here.
What do you think? Will you be using bird motifs in your décor this season?
