A look at the craftsmanship going into Dine By Design East displays

Jonathan Legate, co-founder of Dine By Design East and owner of Jonathan Legate Interior Consultation, is commissioning local furniture maker John Fowler to handcraft some beautiful captain chairs for his dining room space.

Inspired by the exotic fish in Fornasetti’s Acquario wallpaper and the sea creatures discovered by Captain Nemo in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Jonathan is planning a chic sea theme for his Dine By Design East space.

“I began to imagine what an intimate dinner with Captain Nemo would be like today in his submarine or home above water,” Jonathan says.

Based in Bear River, N.S., John Fowler specializes in Windsor chairs, handcrafting each one using traditional methods and tools. In 2009, John was commissioned by Moby Dick Productions to build a chair to be used by Captain Ahab in a remake of Moby Dick. It sounds like John will be a perfect fit for Jonathan’s unique sea-inspired dining space.

John is in the middle of making the chairs right now and sent over some photos showing the progress. The first shows the chair bases assembled, ready for the backs and arm posts.

And here’s a shot from Jonathan of what the finished arm will look like. I love the intricate beauty of the woodwork. You really appreciate how much attention to detail John puts into creating such splendid furniture.

Jonathan’s chef partner for Dine By Design East is Luc Castilloux, executive chef of Morris East’s Bedford location. Hailing from Moncton, N.B., Luc discovered love for food at an early age thanks to his parents who introduced him to cooking.

Luc has worked at the Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta, the Delta Beauséjour and Rouge Resto Club in Moncton. Before leading the kitchen at Morris East, he had a two-year cooking stint at a boutique beach resort owned by Mark Messier. We’re thrilled to have him on board for Dine By Design East.
