The accent wall: don’t just do it!

Guest blogger Shay Ingram deconstructs the accent wall.

An accent wall is an expensive way to make a big statement.  I always say, if you can do one thing, paint!  A proper accent wall will enhance unique features and views.

In the dining room below, we used Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal HC-166 to create a focal point.  Painting the existing built-in cabinets and wall the same colour streamlined the small space and highlighted the high ceilings.

The trick is to accentuate something!  Give your accent wall a job to do.  Placement is important.  Enhance your artwork or architectural features.

If you aren’t sure of where to paint your accent wall, you probably don’t have the right spot!

Here are some tips to help you accentuate (but remember, rules are made to be broken).

 Dos:                                                                           Try Not To:

Draw attention to unique features                 Use in small rooms

Consider the ceiling                                           Go overboard, 1-2 rooms max

Use wallpaper or another material                Accent walls with doorways
