Tonight is the Dine By Design East gala and auction. For our design teams, chefs, volunteers and committee members, it’s the culmination of months of preparation. Tickets are still available for this incredible evening of design, food, wine and artwork.
All event proceeds go to a NSCAD University scholarship program named after Amber Harkins, a former editor of our magazine who died of cancer in 2012. In the past two years, our volunteer-led event has awarded over $40,000 in scholarships to design students.
Since Tuesday, the Olympic Community Centre in Halifax has been abuzz with our 10 design teams creating their dining rooms inside the blank plywood spaces. They’ve had little more than 24 hours total to build their rooms. Volunteers have also been transforming the venue: hanging handmade string globes from the ceiling and nailing pallets to the walls.
I stopped by the venue yesterday and was impressed by creativity and hard work going into each space. In the Avondale Construction room, team members were using over 600 cardboard rolls to assemble a dramatic cathedral ceiling. In the Breakhouse booth, crews were building an eight-foot-high freestanding Jenga out of planks of wood.
Tonight’s gala and auction will showcase these cool spaces for the first time. Things get underway at 6 p.m. for VIP ticket holders–general admission starts at 7 p.m. It’s a great opportunity to mingle with with the designers and chefs, discussing their creations and sampling the food.
Upstairs, there will be live and silent auctions, pop-up galleries from five local galleries and NSCAD students (Read all about the artwork here), and sample drinks from our region’s top suppliers. Lot Six will be running the main bar at the event. As the night unfolds, the event will take on a fun party vibe, with a DJ providing music.
Can’t wait to see you there!
