Homes into Havens 2020 Contest Categories and Rules

To enter, visit eastocastliving.ca/homes-into-havens. There is no entry fee.

Entries must be received by July 30, 2020. East Coast Living takes no responsibility for lost entries.

To be eligible to win in any/all categories, a photograph must be accompanied by a 300-word (maximum) description.

Each description and photo can be entered in one category only: Each photograph and story must have a separate entry form. Limit three entries per person.

The categories are:

Before and After

You have the time to create a new or refreshed space in your home, thanks to COVID-19. Share your before and after photos, so we can see the contrast in the space you’ve renovated, changed, or enhanced!

Organizing Project

Clutter, disorder, chaos, and confusion come to mind when thinking about the “before” of this project! Share photos of that organization project you’ve “been meaning to get done” for ages and finally took the time to do (or were forced to take the time to do as it stared you in the face while you spent more time at home).

Backyard and Deck

Backyards and decks have become space where we can safely spend time outdoors, especially when parks and trails were closed. As you spent time in your backyard, did you realize it needed to be spruced up?

Furniture Makeover

Do you have a family heirloom piece of furniture that needed fabric replaced or maybe a beautiful wooden dressing table that looked outdated and needed painting? Celebrate your hard work transforming old to new-to-you!

Home Office Makeover

Home offices saw a lot more use this spring, as we flattened the curve while working, playing, and staying at home. Did you take an old spare bedroom and transform it into a ergonomic escape? Or did you take your old and dusty rarely used home office and make it a bright and beautiful workspace?

Entries may be colour or black-and-white digital photographs. Moderate digital adjustment (colour correction, cropping, sharpening, etc) is acceptable, but any image with a watermark or signature is automatically disqualified. Winners must submit original material (high-resolution files) for reproduction purposes, so we can publish winning pictures. Digital entries can be uploaded as jpg files at eastcoastliving.ca/homes-into-havens. Files must be at least 2MB. Maximum file size is 6MB.

By submitting the online form, the contest entrant grants to East Coast Living and partners the right to publish the photographer’s entry and name for marketing and promotional purposes. The contest entrant will not receive further compensation for such publication. All entrants also agree that without further payment, their photograph/story entry may be used in print or electronic form to promote future contests by East Coast Living magazine and/or its partners. It is the responsibility of the contestant to ensure that publication of the photographs by East Coast Living magazine raises no legal claims. The contest entrant must own all rights to any photographs entered.

No person may win more than one prize.

Photographs previously published in any print publication, in full or in part, are disqualified.

Professional and semi-professional photographers (any photographers who earn more than $5,000 a year selling their photographs) are ineligible.

The names of the winners, and as many of their photographs as space permits, are scheduled to be published in the Fall 2020 issue of East Coast Living. Before being awarded a prize, each winning photographer will be required to sign an agreement declaring that:

(a) he or she doesn’t work as a professional;
(b) the photograph submitted is his or her original work;
(c) the photograph was taken at the location specified on the entry form.

Prizes must be accepted as awarded and are not redeemable for cash. If prizes cannot be mailed, winners are responsible for picking up their prizes at the East Coast Living office in Halifax, NS.

ELIGIBILITY: The East Coast Living Homes into Havens 2020 is open to anyone, except employees of East Coast Living or any company within the Advocate family, and prize-sponsoring companies, judges, and their immediate families. Contest is open to all residents of Canada (excluding the province of Quebec).

JUDGING: Entries will be judged by a judging panel. Winners will be notified by telephone or email.

By submitting the online entry form, the contest participant consents to the entry of his or her submission and agrees to abide by the contest rules.
